Scott, Wilson Advance to Semifinals at Tiger Holiday Classic

If the holidays are near, that means the Tiger Holiday Classic isn’t far behind. It’s also the end of a busy, wild week for the Orange Panther wrestling team, which placed two grapplers in the semifinals at the end of a long first day.

The 22nd Tiger Holiday Classic started Tuesday at Chapel Hill High School.

At 152 pounds, senior Joe Scott advanced to the semifinals, where he will face a familiar face in the semifinals tomorrow. Scott takes on Eastern Alamance’s Mitchell Dean, who defeated Scott in the Jim King Invitational last month. Dean captured the 152-pound championship and earned Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

On Tuesday, Scott started with a pinfall victory over George Wythe’s (VA) Teion Brown in :37. He scored another pin in the second round over Croatan’s Charles Corbell in 4:51. Scott punched his ticket to Wednesday’s semifinals with an 18-4 major decision over Holly Spring’s Elijah Geniesse, improving to 21-2 on the season.

At 220, sophomore Payton Wilson rolled into the semifinals following a pair of victories. After receiving a bye into the 2nd round, Wilson pinned Mason Wagner of Pinecrest in 1:57. He followed that with a pinfall victory over Chapel Hill’s George McBurney in 2:50. McBurney finished fourth at 220 last season.

Wilson faces Southeast Guilford’s Evan Surgeon (23-0) on Wednesday morning. The championships will take place at approximately 4 PM.

After the first day of the 46-team event, Orange is 7th in the overall standings with 89 points. Cedar Ridge, with ten wrestlers participating, is 32nd.

Eden Morehead is first with 131 points. Jack Britt, the defending Tiger champions, is 2nd with 101. Southeast Guilford is 3rd with 98.

The first day of the Tiger is among the longest days of the season, especially for those who win their opening matches but lose in the third round, forcing them to compete in consolation rounds well into the night.

At 126, Orange’s Jamison Askew will compete for third place Wednesday morning. Askew opened with a 5-0 victory over Carson Pervier of William Hough. He followed with a 8-6 decision over Northwood’s Ian Anderson. West Brunswick’s Harrison Campbell, who entered the tournament 21-0, pinned Askew in :41.

Forced into the consolation bracket, Askew rebounded by pinning Greenville Rose’s Phifer Ozimek in 4:00. Askew, now 21-7, faces Britt’s Bradley Wanovich next.

At 195, Orange’s Shannon Thompson also has a chance at a third-place finish. He was forced into the consolation bracket after a pinfall loss to Northwood’s John Dunning in 5:36. Dunning was the 195 champion at the King Invitational. Thompson defeated Asheboro’s Nathan Otero in 1:22 in the first round, and followed with a 5-3 decision over Carrboro’s Nathanie Otero.

In the consolation bracket, Thompson defeated Southeast Guilford’s Michael Johnson 6-4. He will take on Tyshawn Olverson of Morehead High on Wednesday morning. Thompson is 23-7.

Also alive for Wednesday’s consolation round is Orange’s Josiah Ramirez. He stared the day with a pin of William Hough’s Austin Boyd in 2:37. Then he scored a major decision over Charlotte Providence’s Jake Reid 14-3. Northwood’s Hunter Queen knocked Ramirez into the consolation round with a 16-7 victory. He rebounded by beating Jordan’s Maliik Marcin to improve to 18-5.

Cedar Ridge’s Jacob Tutor started the day with consecutive wins at 138. He defeated Austin Curry of Asheboro 12-9, and reached the quarterfinals after winning an injury decision against Logan Mills of George Wythe. Tutor fell in the following round to Britt’s Wesley Hollingsworth via pinfall.

The only Red Wolf that will compete on Wednesday will be Darius McLeod at 106. McLeod won four matches on Wednesday, including three in the consolation round. He reached the consolation semis by pinning Apex’s Gabe Baragona in 2:52. He faces Austin Hunt next.

Orange sophomore Bailey Hawkins captured victories in his first two matches. He’s now 25-6.

Cedar Ridge’s Grady Pritchard won his opening match at 152 over Northwood’s William Mishoe, a pinfall in 1:49. He fell in the 2nd round to Sawyer Davidson of Asheboro.

Crabtree Scores 33 as Orange Beats Northern Vance 68-61

The Orange basketball team started its season two weeks ago with a 3-game losing streak. The last thing they needed was another 3-game losing streak going into Christmas break.

They won’t, thanks to Connor Crabtree.

Crabtree scored 33 points as the Panthers defeated Northern Vance 68-61 on Friday night in Henderson. Logan Vosburg added 15 points as the Panthers improved to 3-5, 2-0 in the Big 8.

The Panthers now move on to the Pincrest

It was a good night all around for Orange. The Panthers girls basketball team defeated Northern Vance 47-36 to improve to 3-6, 2-0 in the Big 8. The Panthers led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Christmas Comes Early for Southern, Top Red Wolves 71-59

To the truest since of the term, Christmas came early for Southern Durham.

It came Friday night, to be exact.

J’Tori Christmas scored 14 points, including eleven in the first half, as Southern Durham (7-2, 3-0 in the Big 8) defeated Cedar Ridge 71-59. Christmas hit a trio of 3-pointers in the 1st half as the Spartans pushed out to a 11-3 lead. They never trailed by led than 12 in the final 30 minutes of the game.

The riddle for the Red Wolves was finding scoring from someone other than Payton Pappas and Jacob Thomas, the team’s top scorers. Pappas and Thomas combined for all of Cedar Ridge’s points through the first 15 minutes of the game. Jonathan Hall’s three points in the waning minutes of the first half was the only scoring outside of the Red Wolves top duo.

Southern pushed its lead to 21 early in the third quarter. The smoothest Cedar Ridge looked offensively came in the middle of the third quarter, when Hall scored five consecutive points to narrow the gap to 53-41. Every time the Red Wolves got closer, the Spartans would force a turnover and get a basket in transition.

Rashad Dixon led the Spartans with 15, while Jajuan Whitted added 14. Antonio Daye had 13.

The Red Wolves have gone two consecutive games without holding a lead after losing to Northern Vance on Tuesday night.

Hall finished with nine for the Red Wolves. Cedar Ridge now moves on to the Clinton Christmas Tournament, which has a four-team field. They will face C.B. Aycock on December 28th, followed by another game on December 29th. They resume conference play on Tuesday, January 5th against Chapel Hill in Hillsborough.

The Long Trip North: Orange Basketball Travels to Northern Vance Tonight

It’s the final game before Christmas break for Orange tonight, and it serves as a litmus test going into the Holiday Tournament at Pinecrest. The Panthers face Northern Vance, which is off to a 2-0 start in the Big 8 after a win on Tuesday against Cedar Ridge.

Orange is 1-0 in conference play, but have dropped two games this week against Riverside and Northern Durham, arguably the two best teams in the 4-A PAC-6 Conference. Of a more immediate concern for the Panthers is point guard, which has been the case since September.

Returning starter Eryk Brandon-Dean was lost for the season after a torn ACL suffered in a football game against Southern Durham. On Tuesday night, starter Demares Drummond suffered a shoulder injury after colliding with teammate Daniel Mulligan. Drummond didn’t return, and didn’t play the following night in a 67-54 loss to the Knights.

Coach Greg Motley is already down to his third quarterback in Reggie Bradsher, who came off the bench to score 12 points against Riverside. Orange is 2-5 going into tonight’s game.

Orange Panther of the Week: Connor Crabtree

With Orange basketball down two point guards, Connor Crabtree has had to handle the lion’s share of the ball handling duties. Which isn’t unusual until you consider Crabtree is often the tallest player of the floor. Regardless, Crabtree is the leading scorer for the Panthers through the first seven games of the season. On top of that, Lehigh coach Brett Reid, most famous for leading the Mountain Hawks past Duke in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, took in Connor’s game at Bartlett-Yancy. A formal scholarship offer came shortly afterwards.

Connor is the first Orange Panther of the Week for winter sports season.

Northern Vance Tops Cedar Ridge 58-40

Coming off a victory in its Big 8 opener against Oxford Webb, Northern Vance kept its winning streak alive in Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

The Vikings defeated Cedar Ridge 58-40 at Red Wolves Gymnasium, the first losing streak of the season for CRHS. Cedar Riege played without leading scorer Payton Pappas, who is still with the team.

Without Pappas, the Red Wolves found points hard to come by. Jacob Thomas was the only Cedar Ridge in double figures with 11 points. Khalil Barnett added seven.

Cedar Ridge is 0-2 to start the Big 8 slate. They face a huge game Friday night at Southern Durham, which you can hear on the Facebook page for HillsboroughSports.com starting at 7.

Orange Wrestling Gears Up for Road Trip to Northwood

With 13 straight wins and a Jim King Invitational Championship under its belt, the Orange Wrestling team is off to the type of start that is common under coach Bobby Shriner.

But none of that will matter on Wednesday night.

The Panthers travel to Pittsboro to face Northwood. Orange is ranked #2 by the Raleigh News and Observer’s Preps Now, while the Chargers are #12.

Over the weekend, the Panthers swept the Jim Coggins Hall of Fame Classic at Southwest Guilford High School. In four dual matches, Orange defeated Rockingham County 52-19, Eastern Guilford 63-9, North Davidson 60-15, and Rockingham County 52-19.

While the results may not show it, the event was a milestone event in Orange Wrestling history, and state wrestling for that matter. It was the first time that Bobby Shriner was absent for one of his team’s matches.

Shriner’s oldest daughter Madison graduated from Appalachian State University on Saturday. She has been in Ireland as part of an international teaching program. For the first time in 29 years, extending back to his days as an assistant at Chapel Hill High, Shriner missed one of his team’s matches.

Sophomore 120-pounder Bailey Hawkins was named Most Outstanding Wrestling of the tournament. Hawkins went 3-0 to improve his record to 15-1 on the season. He has eight pins.

It was another strong showing for heavyweight Daylen Alston, who scored four victories, all of them pins. Alston is 15-2 with 12 pinfalls. Jamison Askew(126), Payton Wilson (220), Shannon Thompson (195), and Avery Jenkins (138) also went 3-o on Saturday.

Jamison Askew is 13-3 on the season with seven pins. Thompson is tied with Hawkins for most wins on the season with a 15-2 mark. Jenkins pushed his record to 6-2. Wilson, after a 3rd place finish at the JKO, is now 11-2.

Following the Big 8 match against Northwood, the Panthers travel to Mebane for a two-day tournament at Eastern Alamance starting Friday.
