Cedar Ridge Red Wolf of the Week: Cutter Tate

This week’s Cedar Ridge Red Wolf of the Week is wrestler Cutter Tate. During the Red Wolf Invitational on November 17, Tate finished 2nd in the 182-pound tournament. He advanced to the finals after pinning Dylan Wall of Bartlett Yancey in 3:54. Tate opened the season in a tri-match at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh by pinning Bryce Holiday of Triton. On November 20 in a tri-meet at Union Pines, Tate pinned Gage Baughman of North Moore. In a tri-match last week at Cedar Ridge, Tate claimed two victories, including a pinfall win over Sebastian Whitesock of Green Hope in 1:14. In addition to wrestling, Tate sings in the Cedar Ridge chorus and will participate in a performance later this month.

Orange sophomore Jason Franklin discusses the comeback in Stem

On Friday night, the Orange Panthers trailed the Granville Central Panthers 56-45 going into the fourth quarter. The Panthers scored 41 points in the 4th quarter to win 86-77. Sophomore Jason Franklin had a career-high 18 points, including a clutch 3-pointer during Orange’s comeback. Joey McMullin added ten points as the Panthers grabbed a victory against Central, coached by former Orange middle linebacker Mike McDaniel. It was a thrilling finish to the first win of the season under new head coach Deryl Britt. Franklin also nailed some clutch free throws down the stretch as Orange improved to 2-1. Franklin, in his second year on the varsity, had ten points in Tuesday’s season-opening win over Union Pines.

Orange men’s basketball sophomore Kyle Stanley talks win over Granville Central

Orange’s Kyle Stanley scored nine points on Friday night, including two late free throws, to help push the Panthers past Granville Central 86-77 on Friday night. Orange trailed 56-45 going into the 4th quarter, but scored a whopping 41 points in the final eight minutes. Stanley, a sophomore, has had a strong start to the season. In Tueday’s season opener against Union Pines, Stanley scored ten points. It was his first varsity game as the Panthers defeated the Vikings 60-59. Orange is 2-1 and will travel to Burlington Williams on Thursday night, followed by another road trip to Lee County on Friday.

The Orange men’s basketball team trailed by 13 points with 8:43 remaining against Granville Central on Friday night, but stormed back to win 86-77 in a raucous Granville Central Gymnasium. Mekai Collins scored 28 points, while sophomore Jason Franklin added 18, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Zyon Pettiford had 15 as Orange improved to 2-1. The Panthers completed the comeback despite losing guard Machai Holt in the middle of the third quarter, who fouled out. Listen to the final 15 minutes of the game right here!

Orange women’s basketball freshman Jarmil Wingate & Aaliyah Harris discuss win over Granville Central

The Orange women’s basketball team bounced back from a disappointing loss to Northern Guilford with a 45-31 win over Granville Central in Stem on Friday night. Aaliyah Harris led Orange in scoring with nine points. Jarmil Wingate added six points as Orange improved to 2-1. The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 10-2 lead, then used a 20-2 run over the middle two quarters to secure the win. Senior Icez Barnett added eight points. On Thursday night, Northern Guilford came from behind to defeat Orange 41-34 at Panther Gymnasium. Orange went into the fourth quarter leading against the Nighthawks, but was held to one field goal in the fourth quarter. Orange plays at Burlington Williams on Thursday night.

Cedar Ridge Freshman Derrick Smith Discusses Red Wolves Men’s Basketball

The Cedar Ridge men’s basketball team suffered a 65-50 loss to Warren County on Wednesday night at Cedar Ridge Gymnasium. Derrick Smith led the Red Wolves with eleven points. Cedar Ridge is 0-3. The Durham School of the Arts defeated the Red Wolves 52-42 on Tuesday night at Sykes Gymnasium in Durham. Again, Smith led the Red Wolves with eleven points. Cedar Ridge doesn’t have a senior on its roster. Last week in its season-opener against Person, they fielded a team that had only four players with varsity experience. Smith and the rest of the Red Wolves will go for its first win on Friday night when they travel to Siler City to face the Jordan-Matthews Jets. Orange Panther of the Week: Juan Navarro

This week’s Orange Panther of the Week is Juan Navarro. A heavyweight, Navarro is starting for the first time this year as a junior after training with Daylan Alston last year. Alston won the 3A Mideast Regional Championship last year. Navarro has started 6-0 this season. He started the season by pinning an opponent from North Davidson in 2:55 at the Orange Duals. Later in the day, he pinned Sanderson’s Avery Johnson in 5:55. Navarro pinned South Stokes’ Nathan Wood in 2:16. He ended the day with a :48 victory over Wesley Buie of Chatham Central in :48. In the Thanksgiving Duals last Tuesday, Navarro earned a 6-3 win over Person’s Marcus Vincent. He also got a forfeit win against Southeast Guilford. Navarro will compete at the Jim King Invitational on Friday night at Orange High School for the first time.
