Orange High School

There are various banners around the baseball press box at Panthers Field, honoring past All-Conference, All-District and All-State players. Now, there’s not only going to be a new name, but a new banner entirely: All-American.

Catcher Brad Debo was named a member of the American Insurance All USA Preseason Team by USA Today last week. Debo, who committed to play at South Carolina in 2014, is hitting .483 with two home runs and eleven RBIs through Orange’s 9-0 start.

Orange sophomore pitcher Brian Werden didn’t know what to expect when he made his 1st varsity start on Wednesay against Garner. But he made it count. He earned his first victory as a Panther as Orange won 3-1. Werden retired the first eight Trojans, yielding only two hits and one earned run.

At a time when three-sport athletes aren’t as common, Orange left fielder Chandler Compton is thriving. He’s hitting .471 through the Panthers first seven baseball games, including two key RBIs in Orange’s 11-9 come-from-behind victory over Northern Durham. He’s been a regular starter ever since. Compton is also an all-Big 8 performer in soccer, where he earned a scholarship with Wofford.

Though he came off the bench, Orange right fielder Johnny Flynn made some important plays in the Panthers 12-10 win over Southern Lee in Sanford on Saturday. He had a key single in the 4th and robbed the Cavaliers’ Topher Grant of a double with a backhanded catch to start the 7th.

Last Friday, Orange trailed Northern Durham 9-3 going into the top of the 6th. The Panthers stormed back with eight runs in the final two innings to win 11-9. Ryan Puckett earned his first career win with two scoreless innings in relief. He started the game at third base, and added a key base hit during a 5-run sixth that triggered the rally.

Bryse Wilson nearly had a no-hitter against East Chapel Hill on Wednesday. The senior came two outs away before East’s Jackson Hicks reached on an infield single in the 7th. Wilson still struck out 12, earned his first shutout of the year and improved to 2-0 as Orange defeated the Wildcats 2-0.

The Orange softball team continued a strong start on Wednesday night, defeating Burlington Williams 11-3 in Hillsborough. After the game, senior Montana Davidson and junior 2nd baseman Abigail Hamlett talked about the start of the season under new head coach Eddie Davidson.
